Our Voice

It’s that time of year when it’s up to the student body to exercise their rights. It’s Student Council Elections! What is a student council? A student council is a group of students who have been elected by their peers to address issues of concern and organize student events and activities. The council also aims to make positive changes that benefit the students, the school and the surrounding community. At the Princess Margaret School, the student council’s purpose is to:

  1. Strive for good citizenship within the school community.
  2. Respect all individuals in the school community.
  3. Involve all students in sharing ideas to make our school the best it could be.
  4. Help all students work together for the betterment of our school.
  5. Give all students practice in democracy in action.

The President

The person in this position is seen as the Big Kahuna. He / She represents the entire student body, as well as the entire student council. The president is responsible for running council meetings and is in charge of organizing all student council activities. 

The Vice-President

 This person is the second in charge. He / She represents the student body and student council when the president is not able to do so.

The Secretary

The Secretary records the minutes or the “happenings” of all meetings. They maintain a record of all Council correspondence, in addition, the secretary keeps a register of all active members and oversees all publications and publicity relating to the organization.

The Treasurer

This person manages the financial aspects of student council and any other student organizations within the school associated with the council. This includes tasks such as budgeting, financial record keeping, reporting, and ensuring responsible use of funds.

The Public Relations Officer

Also known as the P.R.O. this is the hype man so to speak of the council. He / She keeps permanent records of all the Student Council’s activities.  They promote the councils’ open meetings, elections, programs, legislation, and activities. They also relay information from the council to the student body.

Form Representatives

This person represents their form or level on the council. There is a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th form representative position in the council at the Princess Margaret School. Each Form Rep is there to stand for their level’s voice and interests making sure that each form is treated equally and fairly.

Nominations for Student Council at the Princess Margaret School began on Monday, November 11th through to Thursday, November 14th, 2024. The running candidates will be announced on Friday, November 15th, 2024. Each candidate will have an opportunity to campaign for a week from Monday, November 18th to Friday, November 22nd, 2024. The student council elections will be held on Monday, November 25th, 2024 where students will have the opportunity to vote at polling stations and via electronic ballot.

The State of Affairs

The state of affairs at our school lately have been uneasy to say the least. Perhaps there’s been something in the water, or even in the air. This week alone has been rife with strife, periods of panic and the overwhelming sense that “the kids are not alright”. 

More than a few 5th formers have been candid about their feelings of stress and anxiety due to the looming spectre of CXC. 4th formers have been mixing like oil and water, whilst 3rd formers have either found themselves in the sweet spot or stuck in a rut. Our 2nd form students have begun to assert that they are no longer the babies of the school and in 1st form, the actual babies seem to think that they are bigger than the rest of us. 

Such are the state of affairs at Princess Margaret that the past ten weeks have passed in a blur and yet felt like a boulder. And though the finish line is in sight, perseverance is necessary to keep on going. The missing assignments need to be found, the crowds in the corridors need to make their way into the classrooms and the students need to rally like the West Indies chasing runs. 

There’s a lot to look forward to with our house rivalries talent exhibition and the Karaoke competition where even the Principal tends to showcase his vocals. Here’s hoping the kids will be just fine in time to engage in such festivities. With a fairer state of mind, a better, brighter outcome is always possible.
