Let’s Talk Dirty: Football, Football, Football

Smells like Teen Spirit!

We’ve got spirit, YES, we do!

We’ve got spirit, how about you?

On Friday, January 17th, 2025 at 3:30PM the Princess Margaret School’s under-20 football team will be playing in the “2024-2025 School League Football Finals” at Antigua Recreation Ground. In the morning, a pep-rally will be held in the school’s auditorium, in support of our boys as they go into battle to claim the title of “Football Champions 2024-2025”. Showing support for our team will be the #1 priority, and so here are some things that you, as a supportive student can do to show your school pride!

Make A Game Day Banner or Poster

Gather your poster board, craft supplies and a group of friends and you’re on your way. Cheer on your team or favourite player, or poke fun at the opposing team. Either way, signs should be enjoyable for everyone, so just remember, keep it clean and fun!

Paint Your Face

Painting your face in school colors is a classic way to show some school spirit, especially on game day. To avoid staining your skin blue for a week, be sure to use non-toxic, washable face paint. It’s usually available from your local craft or party store.

Wear School Colors

This is a great idea for showing school pride on an everyday basis, not just for game day. You don’t have to spend tons of money on buying official school spirit wear. In fact, wearing school colors can be quite affordable. You probably already have items with your school colors in your wardrobe. Don’t be afraid to mix and match.

Get Involved: Volunteer

Volunteer to help the team on game day. Whether it be carrying gym bags or being the water boy or gal volunteer and show your support. Not only does this look good on college or job applications, but it’s a way to be directly involved and spread a positive attitude about your school.

Set Your School Fight Song as Your Ringtone/Notification tone

Download an MP3 of your school’s fight song and set as your ringtone. Simple!

Hashtag Your School

#SchoolName. #SchoolColors. #SchoolMascot. Come up with a hashtag for you and your friends at school and see if you can get it to spread. Go Viral!

Doing one or all of these things are fun ways to show school pride, so buy your tickets at the main office, put that PMS Pride or Home of Champions shirt on and come let’s support our LIONS!!!

GO TEAM!!!!

Why do we need a Student Council?

Being elected to be a member of your school’s student council offers you the opportunity to grow as a person. You get to represent your peers while pursuing causes you’re passionate about. The is also the bonus of getting the chance to learn from others and develop skills that will help you in both university and your future career.

A good council allows…

Representation:

The student council represents the student body by voicing their opinions, concerns, and suggestions to the school administration. They allow effective communication, ensuring that students have a say in decisions that affect them.

Leadership and Decision-Making:

The council members develop leadership skills by organizing meetings, facilitating discussions, and making decisions on behalf of the student body. They learn to consider different viewpoints, collaborate with peers, and implement initiatives that benefit the entire school community.

Organizing Events and Activities:

The student council also allows for fun plans and executes various school events and community service projects. These activities promote school spirit, unity, and create opportunities for student engagement and enjoyment.

Community Outreach and Service:

Student councils often engage in community service projects, such as volunteering at local organizations, organizing charity drives, or raising awareness about important social issues. These initiatives promote a sense of social responsibility and encourage students to make a positive impact beyond the school walls.

Advocacy and Problem Solving:

The council serves as an advocate for student rights and concerns. They address issues raised by students, work towards resolving conflicts, and propose solutions to improve the overall school experience. They may also collaborate with school faculty and staff to implement beneficial changes.

Role Modeling and Mentorship:

Student council members act as role models for their peers, demonstrating qualities such as responsibility, integrity, and teamwork. They inspire and mentor fellow students, encouraging them to get involved, develop leadership skills, and make positive contributions to the school.

Having a student council in a school not only empowers students but also fosters a sense of ownership, engagement, and school pride. It promotes a positive school atmosphere, encourages student involvement in the decision-making processes, and provides a platform for students to develop beneficial life skills that will assist them beyond their school years.

Politics?

Good qualities are what you look for when choosing a good student leader. As the student council elections approach and the candidates begin their campaign, here are a few things you should look for in the contenders that you choose to represent you on the Student Council.

Positivity

The leaders that you choose should believe that whatever goal has been set can be accomplished, even if said goal is a bit difficult and may take time. Their positivity should be inspirational to students and staff alike.

Hardworking

Hardworking student leaders inspire and push their classmates to do more. Look for the students that you see working hard, and let them know they are showing signs of being a good leader. If they are hardworking in the classroom then they’ll work hard for you as your council.

In service of others

The students who demonstrate strong leadership skills when they want what is best for others, and are willing to go out of their way to help their peers and communities are the ones who are definitely excellent leaders. In a classroom setting, this is best seen through acts of kindness or selflessness.

A good listener

An important leadership skill is genuinely caring about and listening to the thoughts and concerns of others. Leading others must come from a desire to help. When students practice this skill in group work, they’re not only listening carefully to other students’ concerns, they’re also being more receptive of feedback and are willing to compromise.

A good decision-maker

Students who exhibit great leadership when they evaluate a given situation and come to a well-reasoned conclusion about the best course of action are who you want on your council. Ultimately, good decision-making comes from a sense of responsibility, a good understanding of the problem, and the ability to think under pressure.

A good communicator

Another important student leadership quality is communication because student council members will have to communicate their ideas to the rest of the council and the student body. If students have an idea of how things should be done, they take on the role of being a good leader when they make their suggestions known in an open and respectful manner.

Encouraging

Part of being an effective leader is recognizing that everyone comes with different backgrounds and experiences. A strong leader will support and use the strengths of the council members, while also trying to assist when others are struggling.

Responsible

If something goes wrong, student leaders do not pass the blame or make excuses but take responsibility for their part. Then, they learn from it, do what’s needed to correct what went wrong, and keep moving forward. When things go right, the most effective leaders are humble and recognize the efforts of their group and not just their own.

If you keep these guidelines in mind you’ll choose the BEST leaders for your student council.
